Feng Shui was originally used by the royal families in Chinese to locate the best place for the construction of royal mausoleums.  The theories and techniques were spread out to the civilians over years.  Year after year, using Feng Shui to select a graveyard became a custom for burial in many places in China.

 

Later on, people developed those Feng Shui theories for homes, which were widely accepted and applied by people in China.

 

While the effects on Feng Shui for tombs are more difficult to prove and it involves the argument of the existence of spirits; Feng Shui for homes is easier to explain and the effects are easier to feel as well.
