Why are there so many different names - Qi and Chi, Gua and Trigram, etc?

Different names were created for Feng Shui during the past decades due to different translations and transcriptions.  Before 1979, Wade–Giles was the main system used to transcribe Mandarin to English (e.g.: Chi).  Now, the Pinyin is the most commonly used one (e.g.: Qi).  Since Hong Kong was the only window between China and the western world during 1949 and 1979, Cantonese (another Chinese dialect used in Hong Kong instead of Mandarin) was used in transcribing Chinese to English (e.g. Bat Gwa).  Sometimes translators used translation instead of transcription (e.g. trigram).  All these make Feng Shui practice have different names and is difficult for people who cannot read and understand Chinese characters.

Do we have to use a compass in telling Feng Shui?

Yes and No.  For Feng Shui masters of the Form stream, they do not need a compass to tell the Baqua direction.  However, it is very difficult to use Form stream alone to practice Feng Shui accurately without years of study and practice.  For Feng Shui methods using a Bagua, it is necessary to use a compass to tell the exact direction.  Otherwise, it is like reading a map to find roads without using a compass.

Can I use a common compass instead of a Chinese Loupan?

Yes, you can use any compass that provides an accurate reading.  The Loupan is good for Feng Shui practice as it contains all the charts and tables, making it much easier for the consultant to tell the details.

How to put the flying stars?

The theory of flying stars and their arrangements are quite complicated.  There are different schools advocate for different methods of putting the stars.  Some suggest that the basic flying stars are put according to the current period of time.  For example, if the current year was 1990, then it would be in period 7 (1984 - 2004).  We should put '7' in the centre and then 8, 9, 1, 2, 3 and so on according to the method.  If the current year is 2018, then it will be in period 8 (2004 - 2024).  We should put '8' in the centre and then 9, 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on according to the method.

However, some other schools suggest the stars should be put according to the year that the property was built.  If the property was built in 1976, which was in the period 6 (1964 - 1984), then we should put  '6' in the centre and then 7, 8, 9, 1, 2 and so on according to the method.

Some schools will also put the stars according to the trigram of the owner.  If the owner's trigram is 2, then we should put  '2' in the centre and then 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and so on according to the method.
